TrueLane learner information

Clear terms.
Respectful learning.

This page contains the TrueLane Terms of Business, Learner–Instructor Agreement and Privacy Notice. Please read it before accepting in TotalDrive.

Before you accept

The points you must not miss.

This summary highlights the terms most likely to affect a learner. It should be read together with the full terms below.

01

£60 per hour

Standard lessons are normally two hours unless another arrangement is agreed.

02

48 hours’ notice

Please give at least 48 hours to cancel or rearrange. A late-cancellation charge will not exceed TrueLane’s direct loss.

03

Payment 48 hours before

If payment has not been received, the reserved lesson time may be offered to another learner.

04

Unused hours refunded

Any payment for a lesson that is not delivered is refundable, subject to a fair late-cancellation charge where applicable.

Practical driving tests

Please agree the test date with Rob before booking it. Booking a test does not guarantee TrueLane or its vehicle will be available. The final decision on supplying the vehicle rests with TrueLane.

Part one

Terms of Business.

01

Who these terms are with

TrueLane Driver Training is a trading name of Stones Automatic Driving School Ltd, company number 16482643, registered at Robson House, Chapel Street, Honiton, England, EX14 1EU.

Contact: info@truelane.co.uk or 07506 012666.

02

TrueLane’s approach

Tuition is designed to develop safer, confident and increasingly independent drivers—not simply to get someone to a driving test as quickly as possible. Lessons are adapted to the learner’s experience, confidence, learning needs and progress.

No instructor can guarantee a pass, a fixed number of lessons or readiness by a particular date. Progress and test readiness are judged using the learner’s developing ability to drive safely, responsibly and independently in varied conditions.

03

Lesson price, duration and payment

  • Tuition is £60 per hour. Standard lessons are normally two hours unless another arrangement is agreed.
  • A lesson reminder is normally sent around 72 hours beforehand through Total Drive.
  • Payment is due at least 48 hours before the lesson unless another arrangement has been agreed.
  • If payment has not been received, TrueLane may release the reserved lesson time to another learner.
  • The total for each lesson is its agreed duration multiplied by £60. DVSA test fees are paid separately by the learner.
04

Cancellations, rearrangements and missed lessons

Please give at least 48 hours’ notice to cancel or rearrange. With less notice, TrueLane may charge only the direct loss caused by the cancellation, up to the price of the booked lesson. TrueLane will take reasonable steps to offer the time to another learner. If the slot is refilled, no lesson fee will be charged. Relevant exceptional circumstances will be considered fairly.

If the learner is not at the agreed meeting point, the instructor will try to make contact and normally wait up to 15 minutes. Where contact is made, a reasonable alternative may be agreed; otherwise the lesson will be treated as missed and any charge will be dealt with under the same direct-loss rule. TrueLane will explain how a charge has been calculated if asked.

If TrueLane cancels, the learner may choose a rearranged lesson or a credit or refund of the amount paid for the cancelled time. TrueLane will not keep payment and treat the cancelled lesson as delivered. This does not apply where a lesson cannot lawfully or safely continue because of the learner’s condition, conduct, licence, eyesight, vehicle or insurance.

05

Lesson times and collection points

Lessons begin and end at the agreed times. Late arrival by the learner does not normally extend the finishing time. Changes to collection or drop-off points must be agreed in advance; any extra travel required may form part of the booked lesson time.

Traffic, weather, road closures, vehicle problems and emergencies can occasionally affect arrangements. TrueLane will communicate changes as soon as reasonably possible.

06

Licence, eyesight and fitness to drive

The learner must hold the correct valid driving licence, meet the legal eyesight standard and be legally and medically fit to drive. The learner must tell TrueLane about anything relevant that may affect their legal or safe ability to drive, including a change to their licence, medication or medical condition.

The learner must not attend under the influence of alcohol, illegal drugs or anything that makes driving unsafe. The instructor may refuse or end a lesson where there is a reasonable safety or legal concern; the lesson fee may remain payable.

07

Safety, conduct and the tuition vehicle

The instructor retains responsibility for managing immediate risk and may give direct instructions or use the dual controls where necessary. Abusive, threatening, discriminatory, dangerous or deliberately disruptive behaviour may result in the lesson ending and future tuition being refused.

Smoking and vaping are prohibited in the tuition vehicle. A deliberate breach may end the lesson and future tuition. Any charge following damage or serious conduct must be based on a fair, evidenced direct loss and will not be imposed automatically.

While instructing, the instructor will not use a mobile phone, tablet or other hand-held device or receive calls, including hands-free calls. A tablet will be used only when the vehicle is safely parked and the engine is switched off.

08

Practical tests and use of the TrueLane car

  • The learner must discuss and agree a proposed practical-test date with the instructor before booking.
  • Booking a test does not guarantee TrueLane or its vehicle will be available.
  • Use of the car requires the learner to demonstrate consistent safe, responsible and independent driving, together with suitable preparation and legal eligibility.
  • TrueLane may withhold the vehicle where the learner is not test-ready, safety is in doubt, the booking is unsuitable, payment is outstanding, or the vehicle/instructor is unavailable.
  • The final decision on supplying the tuition vehicle rests with TrueLane. The learner remains responsible for booking and paying the DVSA test fee.
09

Learning in the learner’s own car

Where lessons take place in a learner-owned or third-party vehicle, the registered keeper must ensure it is roadworthy, taxed, has a valid MOT where required, and is insured for paid professional driving tuition and the intended driver.

Evidence may be requested. The owner accepts the ordinary risk of damage arising from the learner’s driving, except to the extent that loss is caused by the instructor’s negligence. The instructor may refuse to use a vehicle considered unsafe, unsuitable or inadequately insured.

10

Prepayments and refunds

Tuition is charged at £60 per hour, with payment due at least 48 hours before each booked lesson. If a lesson is cancelled with at least 48 hours’ notice, the learner may rearrange it or request a refund of the payment for that lesson.

If a learner cancels with less notice, any charge is limited to TrueLane’s direct loss under section 04. The rest of the payment will be refunded. If TrueLane cancels, the learner may choose a rearranged lesson, credit or refund for the cancelled time. Request a refund by emailing info@truelane.co.uk. Refunds will be returned to the original payment method within 14 calendar days after the final balance is agreed. Statutory consumer rights are unaffected.

Any prepaid package bought under earlier terms retains the terms agreed at purchase. Contact TrueLane for a statement of hours used and any remaining balance.

11

Dashcams and optional promotional media

TrueLane vehicles use front and rear-facing video dashcams for road-safety, security, insurance and incident evidence. Routine recording does not include audio. Appropriate notice is displayed in the vehicle.

Routine footage is normally overwritten automatically. Relevant footage may be secured and kept for longer where needed for an accident, complaint, insurance claim, legal matter or safeguarding concern. It will not be published or used for marketing without separate permission or another lawful basis.

Promotional photographs, videos, testimonials and identifying details are separate from routine dashcam use. TrueLane will use the Photography & Image Consent Agreement to record the specific content, identification and publishing channels agreed. Nothing is pre-selected, consent is optional, and refusing or withdrawing consent for future use does not affect tuition.

12

Concerns, complaints and ending tuition

How to complain

  1. Email info@truelane.co.uk with the subject “Complaint”, call 07506 012666, or write to the registered office. Explain what happened, when it happened and the outcome you would like. You may include lesson records, receipts or messages.
  2. TrueLane will acknowledge the complaint, investigate it fairly, keep an appropriate record and provide a written outcome as promptly as possible. Please say if you need somebody to help you communicate.
  3. You may complain directly to the DVSA about an instructor’s service or conduct using the official driving-instructor complaint route or by emailing instructorconduct@dvsa.gov.uk. DVSA can investigate conduct but cannot recover money. Consumer advice is available from Citizens Advice, and data-protection concerns can be raised with the ICO.

Nothing in this process prevents a safeguarding or police report, legal claim or use of statutory consumer rights.

Ending tuition

Either party may end the tuition arrangement. Outstanding lesson fees and any fair charges already incurred remain payable. The refund policy in section 10 applies. TrueLane may stop providing tuition immediately where continuing would be unsafe, unlawful or unreasonable.

These terms are governed by the law of England and Wales. Nothing in them removes rights that cannot lawfully be excluded.

Part two

Privacy Notice.

Stones Automatic Driving School Ltd, trading as TrueLane Driver Training, is the controller responsible for the personal information described below.

A

Information TrueLane may collect

  • Identity and contact details, age/date of birth, address, licence and eyesight confirmation.
  • Lesson bookings, payments, attendance, progress records, reflections, test information and communications.
  • Optional emergency-contact and nominated-person details.
  • Learning preferences and support information the learner chooses to share.
  • Relevant health or medical information where it is needed to adapt tuition or meet safety/legal responsibilities.
  • Dashcam footage, incident records, complaints and insurance information.
  • Technical records created by Total Drive and other learner platforms used at the learner’s request.

Information usually comes directly from the learner. It may also come from a parent or guardian, an authorised nominated person, a referring instructor, the DVSA, an insurer or another party involved in an incident.

B

Why information is used

Contract

To answer an enquiry, arrange and deliver lessons, manage payments, record progress and administer the learner agreement.

Legal obligation

To maintain required financial records and comply with lawful requests, road-traffic, insurance and safeguarding obligations.

Legitimate interests

To operate a safe driving-school business, prevent disputes, protect people and property, improve tuition and establish or defend legal claims.

Consent

Before TrueLane publishes a learner image, video, testimonial or identifying detail, it will ask for explicit written consent for that specific use. Consent is optional, can be withdrawn for future use and does not affect tuition.

C

Health and learning-support information

The learner does not need to disclose a diagnosis. Information that may help TrueLane adapt communication, pacing or lesson support is optional unless disclosure is legally required for safe driving.

Health information receives extra protection. Where consent is the appropriate condition, TrueLane will ask for explicit consent and the learner can withdraw it. Withdrawal does not affect processing already carried out lawfully, and some limited information may still need to be retained for legal claims or safety records.

D

Who information may be shared with

Information is shared only where reasonably necessary, with service providers supporting lesson administration and communication, including Total Drive; with learner tools such as the Theory Test Suite or My Learner Driver when access is activated; and with professional advisers, insurers, emergency services, the DVSA, regulators or courts where required.

Adult learner progress is not discussed with a parent, partner or other nominated person unless the learner has given permission or there is a serious safety, safeguarding or legal reason. For learners under 18, appropriate information may be shared with a parent or guardian to manage the tuition relationship while respecting the learner’s privacy.

TrueLane does not sell personal information. Where a provider processes information outside the UK, TrueLane will use the protections required by data-protection law.

E

How long information is kept

Information is kept only for as long as it is reasonably needed for tuition, legal, accounting, insurance and dispute purposes. Core learner, agreement and payment records may normally be kept for up to six years after the tuition relationship ends. Enquiry records that do not lead to tuition are normally reviewed and deleted after 12 months.

Optional health and learning-support information is reviewed and removed when no longer needed. Routine dashcam footage is normally overwritten automatically; secured incident footage is kept only for as long as the relevant matter requires. Some records may be retained longer where law, insurance, safeguarding or an active dispute requires it.

F

Security and automated decisions

TrueLane uses reasonable organisational and technical measures to protect information and limits access to people and providers who need it. Learners should also protect their Total Drive and third-party account details.

TrueLane does not use solely automated decision-making to decide test readiness, continue tuition or make another decision with a legal or similarly significant effect.

G

Your data-protection rights

Depending on the circumstances, the learner may ask for access to their information, correction, deletion, restriction, portability, or may object to particular uses. Where processing relies on consent, consent may be withdrawn at any time.

Requests should be sent to info@truelane.co.uk. TrueLane may need to confirm identity before responding. A learner can also complain to the Information Commissioner’s Office.

H

Website cookies and similar storage

The TrueLane website uses strictly necessary security and hosting technology so that pages can be delivered safely and reliably. It also uses local browser storage to remember when a visitor has dismissed the website’s cookie information notice.

These essential technologies are not used for advertising or behavioural tracking. Because they are necessary for the website to operate securely or to remember a choice requested by the visitor, they do not require consent. TrueLane does not currently use optional analytics, advertising cookies or marketing pixels.

If optional analytics, advertising or other non-essential tracking is introduced, this information and the website controls will be updated before those technologies are enabled. Links to Total Drive and other external services take visitors to separate websites, whose own privacy and cookie information applies.

I

Updates to this notice

This page may be updated when TrueLane’s services, providers or legal duties change. Material changes will be brought to current learners’ attention. The version and effective date appear on this page.

Digital acceptance through Total Drive

Read first. Then accept.

Electronic acceptance and the date accepted will be retained with the learner’s pupil record. By accepting, the learner confirms that they have read and understood the important points, have access to these full Terms of Business and Privacy Notice, and understand that a test booking does not guarantee use of the TrueLane vehicle.

For an adult learner, permission to discuss progress with a named person is optional and can be withdrawn at any time. Emergency-contact and learning-support information are also optional unless needed to meet a legal or immediate safety requirement.

TrueLane learner information

Learner–Instructor
Agreement.

Terms of tuition and a shared commitment to safe, confident driving.

Version 4.1Effective 29 September 2026Accepted through TotalDrive
Important

This agreement should be read with the prices, lesson details and booking terms shown in TotalDrive, together with TrueLane’s privacy notice and complaints procedure. Nothing in it limits rights that cannot lawfully be excluded, including statutory consumer rights.

01

Purpose and status

This agreement records the terms on which TrueLane provides driving tuition and the commitments made by the learner and instructor. Its purpose is to create a safe, respectful and organised learning relationship, reduce misunderstandings and support steady progress towards independent, responsible driving—not simply passing the practical test.

02

Commercial terms

Tuition is £60 per hour and is normally booked for two hours, unless another duration is agreed. Payment is due at least 48 hours before each lesson. The agreed duration, meeting point and any booking-specific details shown in TotalDrive form part of this agreement. The cancellation rule in section 6.2 applies unless TrueLane gives the learner a more favourable term.

If there is an inconsistency, a specific term clearly displayed and accepted in TotalDrive for the relevant booking will apply to that booking, subject always to applicable consumer law. TrueLane will communicate material changes before they take effect. Changes will not retrospectively alter a confirmed booking unless agreed or legally required.

03

TrueLane and the instructor will

  • act professionally, lawfully and respectfully, prioritising safety and treating the learner fairly without harassment or discrimination;
  • hold the registration or trainee licence required to provide paid car-driving instruction and display the relevant certificate when required;
  • check the learner’s entitlement to drive and ability to meet the statutory eyesight requirement at the first lesson and when reasonably necessary thereafter;
  • provide structured, learner-centred tuition suited to the learner’s experience, needs and agreed goals, including reasonable adjustments where appropriate and practicable;
  • agree lesson objectives, give clear and constructive feedback, maintain a record of lessons and progress, and explain the skills still required;
  • keep the tuition vehicle roadworthy, appropriately insured and suitable for instruction, with properly maintained dual controls where required;
  • account for payments received, explain charges clearly and safeguard advance payments in accordance with the stated refund terms;
  • advise honestly on test readiness and vehicle availability, without guaranteeing a test pass; and
  • keep learner information confidential except where disclosure is authorised, legally required or reasonably necessary to protect someone from harm.
04

The learner will

  • hold a valid provisional licence for the vehicle category, comply with any licence restrictions and promptly disclose any change affecting entitlement to drive;
  • be fit to drive at each lesson, including meeting eyesight requirements and not being affected by alcohol, illegal drugs, fatigue, illness or medication that makes driving unsafe;
  • attend on time with any required licence or documents, give the agreed notice of cancellation and pay fees when due;
  • follow lawful safety instructions and avoid using a handheld mobile device while driving;
  • participate actively, ask questions, practise agreed skills, reflect honestly on performance and work towards jointly agreed goals;
  • treat the instructor, staff, other road users, the tuition vehicle and property with respect;
  • provide accurate information relevant to tuition, insurance and test arrangements; and
  • tell the instructor promptly about anxiety, disability, learning needs or other circumstances for which support or an adjustment may be helpful.
05

How learning will be organised

5.1 Learner-centred plan.

Lessons will normally be one-to-one and adapted to the learner’s progress. The learner and instructor will agree realistic goals and review them regularly.

5.2 Reflection and progress record.

The instructor will record lessons and progress. The learner will be encouraged to assess their own driving, identify areas for improvement and take increasing responsibility for decisions. The learner may ask to see or discuss their progress record.

5.3 Between lessons.

The instructor may suggest reading, reflection or private practice. Any private practice is separate from paid tuition and must be lawful, correctly supervised and properly insured. The learner should tell the instructor about relevant private practice so it can inform the learning plan.

5.4 No guarantee.

Progress and test outcomes depend on many factors. TrueLane will provide professional tuition but does not guarantee that a learner will reach test standard within a particular number of lessons or pass a test.

06

Lessons, cancellations and payments

6.1 Booking.

A lesson is confirmed when accepted by both parties. Tuition costs £60 per hour, normally for a two-hour lesson, unless another duration is agreed. Payment is due at least 48 hours before the lesson; an unpaid slot may be released to another learner. The agreed meeting point and duration apply unless varied by agreement.

6.2 Learner cancellation.

The learner must give at least 48 hours’ notice to cancel or rearrange a lesson. With less notice, TrueLane may charge only the direct loss caused by the cancellation, up to the lesson price, after taking reasonable steps to refill the slot. If the slot is refilled, no lesson fee will be charged. Relevant exceptional circumstances will be considered fairly.

6.3 Instructor cancellation.

If TrueLane cancels, the learner may choose a rearranged lesson or a credit or refund of the amount paid for the cancelled time. TrueLane will not keep payment and treat the cancelled lesson as delivered. TrueLane is not responsible for indirect losses caused by events outside reasonable control, but this does not affect rights that cannot legally be excluded.

6.4 Late arrival.

A learner’s late arrival may shorten the lesson without reducing the fee. If the instructor is late, reasonable equivalent time will be added or credited where practicable.

6.5 Prepayments and refunds.

If a lesson is cancelled with at least 48 hours’ notice, the learner may rearrange or request a refund. For a late cancellation, only the direct loss described in section 6.2 may be charged; the remainder will be refunded. If TrueLane cancels, the learner may rearrange or choose a credit or refund. Email info@truelane.co.uk to request a refund. Refunds will be returned to the original payment method within 14 calendar days after the final balance is agreed. An existing prepaid package remains subject to the terms agreed at purchase. Statutory consumer rights are unaffected.

07

Safety, vehicle and lesson conduct

7.1 Safety decisions.

The instructor may change a route, take physical or verbal control, pause or end a lesson where reasonably necessary for safety. Dangerous, abusive or unlawful conduct may result in the lesson ending immediately; any fee decision will be reasonable and proportionate.

7.2 Devices.

While instructing, the instructor will not use a mobile phone, tablet or other hand-held device or receive calls, including hands-free calls. A tablet will be used only when safely parked with the engine switched off.

7.3 Learner’s vehicle.

If tuition takes place in the learner’s vehicle, the learner must ensure it is roadworthy, taxed where required, has a valid MOT where required, displays legal L plates (or D plates where applicable), and is insured for the learner and for paid professional instruction. The instructor may decline to use a vehicle that they reasonably consider unsafe or unsuitable.

7.4 Damage and penalties.

Each party remains responsible for their own unlawful acts. Responsibility for damage, insurance excesses, parking charges or penalties will be determined by the facts, the applicable insurance policy and the law; this agreement does not impose automatic liability regardless of fault.

08

Driving tests

8.1 Booking and management.

The learner must book and manage their own category B car practical test using the official GOV.UK service. Before booking, the learner should discuss readiness, timing, test centre and instructor availability, and use the instructor’s reference number where appropriate.

8.2 Readiness and use of the tuition vehicle.

Use of the tuition vehicle for a test is not automatic. It depends on prior agreement, payment of the stated fee, vehicle availability and the instructor reasonably considering the learner safe and sufficiently prepared. The instructor will give as much notice as reasonably possible if the vehicle cannot be supplied, particularly where this may allow the learner to protect the test fee.

8.3 Test-day requirements.

The learner is responsible for bringing the documents required by DVSA and arriving in time. The instructor will ensure any TrueLane vehicle supplied meets the applicable test and road-law requirements.

8.4 Accompaniment.

At the learner’s request, and subject to DVSA rules, the instructor may accompany the learner on the test and/or attend the examiner’s debrief.

09

Privacy, recordings and communications

9.1 Personal data.

TrueLane may use learner information to arrange and deliver tuition, keep progress and payment records, support safety, administer tests and meet legal, insurance and regulatory duties. Further details, including retention and individual rights, are set out in TrueLane’s privacy notice.

9.2 In-car recording and media.

Any dashcam, audio, video or telematics use must be explained. Before TrueLane publishes a learner image, video, testimonial or identifying detail, it will ask for explicit written consent for that specific content, identification and publishing channel using the Photography & Image Consent Agreement. Consent is optional, can be withdrawn for future use and will not affect tuition. Test footage will not be shared without the permissions required by DVSA and the learner.

9.3 Communications.

Learners must not post confidential, abusive or defamatory material about staff or other learners. Nothing prevents either party from giving an honest review, reporting a safeguarding concern, seeking legal advice or making a protected complaint.

10

Respect, safeguarding and boundaries

Tuition must be professional and free from bullying, harassment, discrimination, sexualised behaviour, intimidation or retaliation. Concerns about conduct or safety should be raised promptly with TrueLane’s designated contact. Confidentiality may be limited where disclosure is required by law or reasonably necessary to address a risk of harm. Where the learner is under 18, communications and collection arrangements may include a parent or guardian where appropriate, while respecting the learner’s dignity and data rights.

11

Complaints and disputes

  1. Email info@truelane.co.uk with the subject “Complaint”, call 07506 012666, or write to TrueLane’s registered office. Explain what happened, when it happened and the outcome you would like.
  2. TrueLane will acknowledge the complaint, investigate it fairly, keep an appropriate record and provide a written outcome as promptly as possible.
  3. The learner may complain directly to the DVSA about an instructor’s service or conduct through the official driving-instructor complaint route or by emailing instructorconduct@dvsa.gov.uk. DVSA cannot recover money. Citizens Advice can give consumer advice, and the ICO handles data-protection complaints.

Nothing in this process prevents a safeguarding or police report, legal claim or use of statutory consumer rights.

12

Ending tuition

Either party may end the tuition relationship by giving reasonable notice. TrueLane may suspend or end tuition immediately where there is a serious safety risk, violence, harassment, fraud, unlawful conduct, loss of driving entitlement, persistent non-payment or a material repeated breach. Where practicable, concerns will first be explained and an opportunity given to resolve them. Any final account and refund for unused prepaid lessons will be calculated under section 6 and applicable law.

13

General terms

13.1 Changes.

Any material change to prices, cancellation terms or other core conditions will be communicated before it takes effect. A change to this agreement should be recorded in writing or another durable form.

13.2 Severability.

If a provision is found unenforceable, the remaining provisions continue so far as legally possible.

13.3 Governing law.

This agreement is governed by the law of England and Wales, unless mandatory consumer law requires otherwise. The courts with jurisdiction under applicable law may hear disputes.

14

Electronic acceptance through TotalDrive

The learner’s agreement is recorded electronically through TotalDrive. By accepting these terms in TotalDrive, the learner confirms that they have been given access to this agreement, have read and understood it, and have had an opportunity to ask questions before accepting. No signature or date is required on this website copy.
